Outlet Mall Traffic in Florida Up 14% Year-Over-Year as Value Shopping Surges

Discount and outlet retail formats are outperforming full-price counterparts across the state as inflation-conscious consumers seek deals without sacrificing brand quality.

Outlet and discount retail formats are outperforming their full-price counterparts across Florida, with foot traffic at the state's major outlet centers up 14% year-over-year as inflation-conscious consumers seek brand-name value without paying full retail prices. The trend is reshaping how national brands think about their Florida distribution strategy.

Florida's three largest outlet destinations — Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, Orlando Premium Outlets, and St. Augustine Premium Outlets — are all reporting record or near-record visitation in 2026. Sawgrass Mills, already one of the largest outlet malls in the United States, saw a 17% increase in traffic in the first half of the year, driven in part by international tourists from Latin America and Europe who specifically seek out outlet shopping.

"Outlet retail has historically been countercyclical — it does well when consumers feel economic pressure," said retail analyst Patricia Vega of Marcus & Millichap. "But what we're seeing in Florida goes beyond that. Even higher-income shoppers are gravitating toward outlet formats because the value proposition has become genuinely compelling."

Brands are responding by upgrading their outlet presence. Several luxury labels that previously maintained minimal outlet footprints in Florida have announced plans to open larger, more prominently positioned stores at Sawgrass Mills and Orlando Premium Outlets, signaling a shift in how the outlet channel is perceived within brand portfolios.

The growth in outlet traffic is also benefiting surrounding retail ecosystems. Restaurants, hotels, and entertainment venues near major outlet centers report increased business on outlet-heavy shopping days, and local governments are taking note of the economic multiplier effect.

"Even higher-income shoppers are gravitating toward outlet formats because the value proposition has become genuinely compelling — this is no longer just a budget-shopper story."
